This section describes the ways to show, hide, move, resize, and search through the tool windows.

If a tool window does not have bars, buttons, or mnemonics on the buttons shown, most likely the options that control their visibility are switched off. See Configuring Tool Windows for more information.

Items in the Window | Tool Windows menu and the buttons on the Tool Window Bar may be disabled if the corresponding tool window is not relevant in the current working context. Accordingly, if a shortcut does not invoke the corresponding tool window, check the Window menu. The shortcuts for tool windows that are out of context, are disabled.

To have a tool window shown, do one of the following
  • Choose Window | Tool Windows | <tool window> on the main menu.
  • Use Alt+W+TAlt W T and arrow keys to navigate to the desired command.
  • Right-click the corresponding Tool Window button on the Tool Window Bar and choose Show on the context menu.
  • Click the corresponding Tool Window button on the Tool Window Bar.
To have a tool window hidden, do one of the following
  • Click the Hide button hide.png on the title bar of the tool window.
  • Click the hideSide.png button on the title bar of the tool window to hide all tool windows on that Tool Window Bar.
  • Right-click Tool Window button in the Tool Window Bar and choose Hide on the context menu.
  • Right-click the Tool Window title bar and choose Hide on the context menu.
  • Use Shift+EscShift Esc to hide the tool window in focus.
To have a tool window moved to another Tool Window Bar, do one of the following
  • Right-click the corresponding Tool Window button on the Tool Window Bar and choose Move on the context menu, that opens. On the submenu, choose the destination Tool Window Bar (Top, Bottom, Right or Left).

To increase maximum number of tool windows to be shown at a time, do one of the following
  • Right-click the Tool Window button in the Tool Window Bar and choose Split mode on the context menu. This allows the tool window not overlap the currently opened tool window, but split the frame space in order to display both tool windows.

  • Use the Floating mode and resize procedure in order to flexibly arrange tool windows on the screen.
