Introduction

Welcome to the premier issue of the JetBrains .NET newsletter. Our customers regularly inquire me about new releases, support for various technologies, website materials, and so on. We currently run an entertaining .NET blog (you should definitely check it out), but we always wanted to deliver a summary of what's going on in the company to our valued customers: this is why we've decided to start this newsletter. I'll try to keep you in sync with the latest JetBrains news and answer as many of your questions as I can :). If you have a question or an idea or want to contribute some content, please drop me a line: news@jetbrains.com.

Release Plans

The .NET team is working day and night at full speed on ReSharper 4.5 and dotTrace 4.0, both of which will raise the bar of development productivity and profiling tools respectively. So, what do these releases bring to you?

ReSharper

We're boosting performance in version 4.5 — ReSharper will feel like it's been turbocharged!

We are also unveiling a fascinating feature that deserves a special mention: Solution-Wide Analysis. In addition to the current abilities to detect errors in your entire solution, ReSharper 4.5 enables you to identify unused code, excessive access rights, overly specific types and such on.

Other feature highlights of ReSharper 4.5 include:

  • Better Visual Basic support: our cross-language refactorings and editing experience enhancements will better support VB code
  • New refactorings
  • Enhanced setup for naming conventions, which will be supported by all ReSharper features
  • Multiple new productivity enhancements

We expect first public builds of ReSharper 4.5 to be available by the end of the year, Q1'2009 bringing the release. And the upgrade will be free for ReSharper 4.0 customers.

dotTrace

dotTrace 4.0 will also bring significantly new experience to .NET developers. Among the features that got into the release you'll see:

  • Support for line-level profiling
  • Enhanced performance and scalability: dotTrace is now able to handle server-scale snapshots of hundreds of gigabytes in size
  • Improved filtering functionality
  • A number of other amazing features which we'll describe in future issues of this newsletter
While dotTrace 4.0 will be a paid upgrade, we announce a special offer for those of you who decide to make a purchase from now on. Read more below.

JetBrains at PDC and TechEd

In October and November we participated in the PDC and TechEd conferences. It was great to hear a lot of nice things our customers had to say about ReSharper. We literally had crowds of visitors at our stands, and had a lot of engaging discussions going on. Also, as usual, we had our sweepstakes and gave out a bunch of ReSharper licenses and company T-shirts.

Thanks to everybody who dropped by!

Tips & Tricks

To take full advantage of ReSharper, learn and use it's keyboard shortcuts. Once you've adopted them into your coding routine you'll "feel" all of ReSharper's features at your fingertips.

Here's an extremely useful document — ReSharper 4 Default Keymap: Visual Studio scheme. Print the PDF document and keep it on your desktop as a handy guide for all the ReSharper shortcuts you need!

Two of ReSharper's most visible features are quick-fixes and context actions (those little red and yellow bulbs). Click here to see how they differ from each other and how to configure them.

Learn how to take advantage of ReSharper's code navigation features by using the context-based " Navigate from Here" menu. A single shortcut is all you need to have the whole solution at your fingertips!

Special Xmas Offer

Purchase or upgrade to dotTrace 3.1 after December 17, 2008 and you'll qualify for a free upgrade to version 4.0.

Also, if you're planning to purchase additional ReSharper licenses or, if you're new to both ReSharper and dotTrace, you can save an additional 30% off the regular price of dotTrace when purchasing dotTrace together with ReSharper.
