Don't start 2010 without ReSharper 5 Beta!

Hi again from the JetBrains .NET Team!

We hope the New Year is off to a good start for you!

We spent much of 2009 improving ReSharper, which is nearing its fifth major release. In fact, a beta is already available for you to try. But first, let us tell you why you should be excited about it!

ReSharper has not only sharpened its code analysis, but is also targeting a wider audience thanks to its new, comprehensive approach to web development. At the same time, the tool now provides new features useful at solution/project level (in addition to class level), which is great news for individual developers as well as whole teams. And last but not least, ReSharper already supports Visual Studio 2010 (Beta)!

ReSharper 5.0 has evolved in these major directions:

  • Web Development: We have greatly extended the toolset available to ASP.NET developers when they work with markup files and web site infrastructure.
  • Project and Team: ReSharper becomes a valuable assistant not only to individual developers but also to teams working with large, complicated projects. View, change and maintain project structure with ease!
  • Support for Visual Studio 2010: ReSharper 5.0 provides support for the new Visual Studio earlier than ever. Of course, Visual Studio 2008 and Visual Studio 2005 are supported, too.
  • Code Analysis: This area includes several improvements, from implementing a substantial pack of new code inspections, to upgrading foreach and for loops to LINQ queries, and letting you track the way data values and method calls are passed through your code.
  • Among other enhancements are extended IntelliSense, bookmarking, native NUnit support, and other goodies.

Read on to see exactly what's new or download ReSharper 5.0 Beta now.

ReSharper 5.0 RTM is scheduled for mid-February. Buy ReSharper 4.5 today and upgrade to v5.0 for free when it comes out!

Inside the ReSharper Team

Many of you must be wondering what really goes on in the clandestine JetBrains labs. Are there hundreds of undercover software engineers, toiling day and night to bring you more and more ReSharper improvements and upgrades? Finally, we're ready to lift the veil of secrecy. Starting with this issue, we'll be bringing you random interviews with ReSharper developers.

Our first 'victim' is Sergey Coox, a leading JetBrains developer. His passion for auto racing has inspired us in creating the imagery, promotion campaign themes and splash screens for ReSharper 4.5, which you might remember. Read on to see what makes Sergey tick.

Hi Sergey! It's great that you're happy to be showcased in our newsletter :) So, which ReSharper features have you personally worked on?

— I joined the ReSharper team 5 years ago when the original idea of a 'ReSharper IDE' was still in the air. My job was to design and code the UI, the window system, the command system and other things like that. Eventually, when we gave up on the IDE idea, we shifted focus to supporting various Microsoft technologies. I was lucky to delegate UI design to Sergey Baltic (who's much better at it anyway!) and carried on with supporting ASP.NET and later XAML. Then, about a year ago, I was assigned with managing the project model. I've also laid my hands on a few minor features, like extend selection and parameter info.

You've won over a dozen awards as a racer. Could you tell us a bit more about this hobby of yours?

— Well, racing is a huge adrenaline rush and a ton of fun! Especially when you get into a competitive circuit and start racking up trophies :) Personally, I love racing myself but can't stand watching it! The most I can handle watching is a brief World Rally Championship newsreel.

I first got interested in racing when I took a defensive driving course. Those instructors are all into racing when they're off-duty. Some time later, my friends got me to try go-karts? and the rest is history!

Many people see racing as something exciting, but also really fast and dangerous. What's the most exciting story in your experience?

— It sure is fast, but not really that dangerous :) I've been in quite a few fun and weird situations, so here's a couple for you.

It's Picnic Rally 2005, 40 minutes before race start. We're working away, drilling something to tighten the spare or maybe fit a second one. Not sure why we needed a second spare at a short asphalt race, but whatever. So, just before we're ready to roll, someone says, "Guys, I've just drilled into the gas tank!" We only had 40 minutes, mind you, not to mention a 5-7 drive to get there! Lucky for us, there was a replacement gas tank right there in the garage. We made it to the race not a minute too late!

The other story is from Rally Russia 2008. We set a record of sorts by killing 9 tires in one race! Ran out of spares and had only 3 wheels to get to the finish line. The left rear wheel had no plate to speak of? Still, we made it, sparks flying and all, and even got cheered along the way!

Sounds like fun! And do your racing skills ever help you in your work?

— They sure do! I save a lot of time commuting, so I can get all my work done at a leisurely pace! ;)

Thanks, Sergey! Keep up the great work!

Develop with pleasure!

Hopefully your 2010 will be full of productive development. We at JetBrains will do our part to make it as productive as possible!

We recently released TeamCity 5.0 — the latest major version of our continuous integration and build management system. With TeamCity, you can set up a build server within minutes and enjoy out-of-the-box continuous unit testing, code quality analysis, and early reporting on build problems — even without leaving Visual Studio (or your other favorite IDE).

Last fall we introduced a new tool called YouTrack (previously code-named Charisma) — a keyboard-centric web-based bug and issue tracker.

The first half of 2010 will see the release of a long-awaited upgrade to dotTrace — our memory & CPU profiler for .NET. All in all, you can count on JetBrains to unleash some exciting surprises this year.

We always strive to make our products better and fill this newsletter with the most exciting developments. If you have any questions, concerns or any other feedback, please email us at news@jetbrains.com. We appreciate your input!
