Agile Boards

Agile Boards in YouTrack are designed to help teams plan, visualize and manage their work in an efficient manner, with support for both Scrum and Kanban processes.

Scrum Board Based on Search Query

Agile board in YouTrack is an alternative view of the Issues list. The board is defined by a search query, so you get all the issues that match your search query on the board automatically. The board is also defined by the project or a set of projects, and a Fix version which defines a sprint on the board.

For example, define your board by the search query: by: {myproject team} to see only the issues reported by your project team.

Product Backlog

Create a product backlog to manage your epics and user stories. A backlog is a saved search that defines your plan for the future product development. When you create a new board, YouTrack automatically creates a backlog which includes all the unresolved issues in your project(s) with no Fix version. More backlogs can be defined as needed based on your saved searches.

Group Tasks in Swimlanes

Tasks can be grouped together by user stories defining swimlanes. Tasks inside a user story appear as cards on the board and can be moved inside the swimlane. Each task can be updated, estimated and moved on the board. You can perform virtually any operation with a task that you can with an issue.

Orphan Tasks

Tasks that are not associated with any user story, such as critical bugs, can also be placed on the board and managed in the same way. An orphan lane can be shown at the top or at the bottom of the board.

Backlog Management

Prioritize your user stories by dragging them over the list based on their priority and implementation order. You can also manage tasks inside the user stories directly in the backlog. Use handy shortcuts to organize and modify the backlog on the fly.

Swimlanes Context

With even more flexibility in configuring the Agile board, you can set any issue attributes as Swimlanes. For example, choose the Priority field and its ‘Critical’ and ‘Show-stopper’ values as a Swimlane to focus on important issues. Or choose the Assignee field to get an overview of each team member's individual tasks.

Sprint Planning

Create and manage sprints from the board. A sprint is defined by the Fix version, and can be replaced with any field of the Version type. You may choose to move all unresolved tasks from one sprint to the next. Easily plan your sprint by dragging user stories along with their tasks from your backlog to the board.

Board Columns

Normally, you would use issue states to define the columns on the board. When configuring a board, choose only those states, you want to visualize on the board. For example, use Open, In Progress and Done states. However, the columns may be defined by any Enumeration field like Priority, Type, etc.

Multi-Level Boards

Create an Epics board to track the overall progress of your project. Set epics as swimlanes and user stories as their tasks that move inside each swimlane. An Epics board provides a high-level overview that’s invaluable for your management needs.

At the lower level, create a Development board, with user stories set as swimlanes and their tasks inside. This board visualizes the team’s progress inside each sprint.

Burndown Chart

Get a clear view of your team's progress. A burndown chart comparing Ideal versus Real effort remaining can quickly tell you whether the team is on track for completing a sprint.

Burndown with No Estimation

When you have no Estimation for your tasks, an Ideal burndown is calculated based on the total number of tasks. Remaining effort is created based on the number of unresolved tasks remaining on the board.

Weekends on Burndown

Weekends are reflected on the Ideal burndown to let your remaining effort graph approach the ideal one. Your Burndown chart becomes more realistic, pausing the ideal process during the weekends.

Burndown with Estimation in Ideal Days

When you Estimate your tasks in ideal days (using the Integer estimation type), an Ideal burndown is calculated based on the total task estimations. Remaining effort is created based on the total estimation of unresolved tasks on the board.

Burndown with Time Tracking

Enable Time Tracking for your project and get enhanced Burndowns, with a Spent time chart that’s calculated based on the work items logged for the sprint tasks. In an ideal agile world, Spent time chart is a mirror image of the Ideal burndown. In the real world, it gives an idea of how realistic your estimation is. Spent Time is also added to the Remaining effort chart, to make it smoother and more reflective of your real progress.

Kanban Board

Easily create different columns representing the different stages in the pipeline. As you work on tasks, move them along the board.

Cumulative Flow

The Cumulative Flow chart lets you easily see how the work is flowing through the system, with potential bottlenecks highlighted. It shows how your tasks are distributed by different states at the moment.

Limit Work in Progress

Define a maximum WIP (Work in Progress) for each column to monitor whether you have reached your maximum number of tasks and take control of your productivity.

Progress Bar

Use the Progress Bar to check your current board progress at a glance. It shows the percentage distribution of tasks on the board by states, and gives a clear view of the current progress and remaining work.

A Board You'll Love Using

Apply Commands

Modify as many tasks as you need at once by using powerful commands, just like you normally do in YouTrack. For example, simply type: Major Assignee Carry.Parker to set major priority and reassign the selected tasks to Carry Parker.

Search Queries on the Board

Use advanced search queries to filter the tasks on the board, just like you normally do in YouTrack. For instance, you can filter all unassigned issues (#unassigned), or those assigned to yourself (for:me), or even filter unresolved critical bugs only (#bug #critical #unresolved).

Keyboard-Centric Board

YouTrack supports shortcuts extensively. Use handy key combinations to move the cards across the board; add, edit, and delete swimlanes and cards; switch between the board and the search box; show/hide the backlog; and much more!

Ultimate Agile Experience

Multiple Boards

With so many Agile board features available, why stick to just one board? Create as many boards as you need and track your projects in every possible way—the sky’s the only limit! Create your personal boards or share them with the team or the whole company.

Cross-project Board

Create a cross-project board and define what projects will be associated with it. Just keep in mind that all of these projects need to share the same Fix version field, which will be used to identify sprints on the board.

Column Visibility

Choose what you really want to see and stay focused only on the column(s) that matter for you. This option is private for you and does not affect any other users.

Play Your Cards Right

View Subtasks on the Card

Create subtasks of any issue represented by a card on the board. Subtasks will be shown on the card indicating its progress.

Three Levels of Detail

Decide how much detail you need on board cards, by choosing from three board views: Minimal, Compact, or Detailed.

Color-coded Cards

Highlight your cards to visually distinguish them based on their Priority, Severity, or any other field. It’s up to you to decide which field values will be used to color your tasks on the board.

Card Assignee Avatars

Check who is working on which tasks at a glance. Each board card includes the avatar of the issue’s assignee to indicate who’s responsible for the task.
