JetBrains RubyMine 1.0 — Brand New Ruby and Rails IDE

JetBrains releases RubyMine, a full-featured development environment for productive Ruby and Ruby on Rails development

April 28, 2009

Prague, Czech Republic, April 28, 2009 — JetBrains, the creators of intelligent, productivity-enhancing development tools, have announced the general availability of RubyMine 1.0, the company’s new IDE for productive Ruby and Rails development.

Since the initial announcement of RubyMine IDE and its Public Preview release in November, the new product has received great attention from the Ruby and Rails developers community. “Despite the belief that most Ruby/Rails developers are happy writing code in simple text editors, we had RubyMine downloaded around 25,000 times since the Public Preview announcement. Early RubyMine adopters provided a great deal of feedback and worthy improvement suggestions,” said Dmitry Jemerov, the RubyMine lead developer. “We are certain that, as with all of our highly-intelligent development tools, Ruby developers can be extremely productive by using RubyMine. In fact, version 1.0 is just the beginning — we have tons of ideas and plans for new releases.”

One of RubyMine’s key advantages is its deep understanding of the Ruby language’s specifics, its dynamic nature, and code conventions. RubyMine performs a comprehensive analysis of project code and offers developers best-in-class code insight and code completion suggestions that no other Ruby/Rails IDE does. Based on its knowledge of the internals of the Rails framework, RubyMine provides a range of effective Rails-aware refactorings, which greatly simplifies making changes to the code.

JetBrains’ flagship product, IntelliJ IDEA, has always been highly praised for its web development capabilities, such as great HTML, CSS and JavaScript editing support. RubyMine builds upon these capabilities with its own amazing features for Ruby and Rails developers. Its web-authoring strengths are a great match for an easier and more productive web development with Ruby on Rails.

Other RubyMine 1.0 key features include:

  • Advanced support for Ruby on Rails development — including Rails-aware code completion, inspections and refactorings, specialized project views and quick navigation.
  • Version Control Systems integration — with unified UI and advanced features such as change lists and shelved changes for all supported systems. Integration with Subversion, Git, Perforce, and CVS is available out of the box.
  • Graphical Ruby and Rails Debugger — with breakpoints in Ruby code and even in Rails RHTML view files.
  • RSpec and Test::Unit testing frameworks support — with GUI-based test runner.
  • Open API for creating plugins in Ruby or Java — plus a number of already available IDE plugins.

A single-developer Commercial License is priced at $99 (US). The license includes free RubyMine updates for 1 year after the purchase date, covering even major new releases. RubyMine is going to be updated frequently, with major improvements and support for new technology features in every new release.
