Air Context is a cloud-based service that indexes your code and stores vector representations of it in a vector database. The embeddings are always computed on the Air Context server. Where the index is stored depends on your account and the repository size:

* On the Air Context server: by default for members of organizations in JetBrains Console, and for larger repositories of all users.

* On your machine: by default for small repositories indexed by users who aren't members of an organization in JetBrains Console. Organization members can switch a project to local storage with `jbcontext config set storage local`. Local storage refuses large repositories.

> **Note:**
> Air Context stores vector representations of your code rather than the raw source. The stored data is never used for model training.

For a step-by-step description of what happens to your code during indexing, storage, and retrieval, including the data flow diagram, see [How indexing works](context-indexing.html#how-indexing-works).

## What is stored

* Code chunks stored as vector embeddings. Chunks of source code are converted to embeddings and stored in a vector database. Raw source code isn't stored.

* File paths. Air Context stores file paths to trace back the location of code chunks to the corresponding files in the repositories they originated from.

* Code chunk offsets. Air Context stores offsets that point to the exact location of the stored chunk in the source file.

* Repository and revision identifiers. The identifiers of the repository and the specific Git revision that were used as the base for code indexing. For non-Git folders, Air Context instead stores an SHA-256 hash of the folder's canonical path joined with the host name of the machine where the folder is located.

## Data retention

Data stored on the Air Context server is retained for 14 days after it was last searched, while searching the index resets this period. There is currently no option to extend retention without searching or re-indexing. Locally stored indexes aren't subject to this rule: they persist until you remove them with `jbcontext remove-index`.

## Storage locations

Repository data stored on the Air Context server is kept within the JetBrains cloud infrastructure on Google Cloud. The geographical location of the primary storage is Ireland, with index replicas on Google Cloud in the United States. The replicated US-based storage is used only for faster retrieval, while data processing and storing into vector databases only take place in the primary location in Ireland.

When an index is stored locally, the embeddings are still computed on the Air Context server, but the index itself, that is, the vectors, file paths, and offsets, is kept in the Air Context home directory on your machine and isn't uploaded.

The Air Context home directory is `~/.jbcontext` on macOS and Linux and `%LOCALAPPDATA%\JBContext` on Windows.

## Data sharing and access

Access to indexed repository data depends on whether the user belongs to an organization:

* Organization members. Indexed repository data is available only within the same organization.

* Individual users. For users who aren't organization members, indexed data is available only to the user who indexed it.

## Data removal

You can delete indexed data using the `jbcontext remove-index` command. For the options, see [jbcontext remove-index](context-cli-reference.html#ref-remove-index).

The command removes the repository's indexes wherever they are stored, locally or on the Air Context server. To prevent a repository or parts of it from being indexed again, add a `.jbcontextignore` file, as described in [Exclude files from indexing](context-indexing.html#exclude-files-from-indexing).

In an organization, an administrator can also delete the indexes of selected repositories from JetBrains Console. See [Delete the index of a repository](manage-individual-repository-indexing.html#delete-repository-index).
