IntelliJ IDEA 14.1.0 Help

Activating a license for IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate

You can evaluate IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate for 30 days. After that period, you need to buy IntelliJ IDEA and activate your license.

If the licenses in your company are managed by the IntelliJ IDEA License Server, and you are going to work offline or outside your corporate network, you should get a permanent license ticket from the Server. (To find out if your company is using the License Server, contact your system administrator.)

Activating a license

  1. Click Register on the Welcome screen or select Help | Register.
  2. In the IntelliJ IDEA License Activation dialog that opens, select an appropriate license activation option and specify the associated settings.
    • License key . Select this option if you have a license key. Specify your user name (or company name) and the key. (The corresponding information is in your license certificate email.)

The recommended way of entering the name and the key is by copying the information from the certificate email and then pasting it into the fields (Ctrl+C/Ctrl+V on Windows and Linux; Cmd+C/Cmd+V on OS X).

If IntelliJ IDEA rejects the license information, see The key is not accepted for a possible solution.

    • License server . Select this option if there is the IntelliJ IDEA License Server on your company's intranet. Specify the server URL in the License server address field. For the address to be entered automatically, click the Discover server button.

To find out if your company is using the License Server and what its URL should be, contact your system administrator.

See also, Getting a permanent license ticket from the License Server.

    • JetBrains Account . Select this option if your IntelliJ IDEA license is linked with your JetBrains Account. Specify your JetBrains Account access credentials.
  3. Click OK.

Getting a permanent license ticket from the License Server

If there is the License Server on your company's network, you, most probably, are using a floating license ticket. This kind of ticket has a limited period of validity. To renew the ticket, your computer has to periodically connect to the Server.

(To check if you are using a floating ticket, select Help | Register and look for the text Floating ticket obtained in the License Activation dialog.)

If you are going to work offline or outside your corporate network, you should get a permanent license ticket from the License Server. To do that:

  1. Select Help | Obtain Permanent License.
  2. In the dialog that opens, type your email address and click OK. (The activation code will be sent to the specified address.)

A dialog for entering the activation code opens. Don't close this dialog unless you enter the activation code.

  3. Switch to your email program and find the message with the activation code.
  4. Copy the activation code from the email into the dialog and click OK.

When you don't need the permanent license ticket anymore, you can return it back to the License Server. To do that, select Help | Return Permanent License.
