IntelliJ IDEA 2025.3 Help

IntelliJ IDEA as a unified product

Unified IntelliJ IDEA Overview

Previously, IntelliJ IDEA was offered as two separate products: IntelliJ IDEA Community Edition and IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate with extended capabilities.

Starting with IntelliJ IDEA 2025.3, we're combining these two editions into a single, unified product: IntelliJ IDEA. This change allows all users to access essential functionality without needing to decide between editions.

The core functionality of IntelliJ IDEA remains free and now comes with even more features compared to the former Community Edition. Additionally, the new Ultimate subscription gives you access to advanced tooling with a free 30-day trial available for all users when installing IntelliJ IDEA.

Afterward, you can choose to subscribe to get an Ultimate experience or continue using IntelliJ IDEA for free.

Next steps

For Community Edition users

Starting with IntelliJ IDEA 2025.3, your existing Community Edition will automatically update to unified IntelliJ IDEA, bringing you new features at no cost while preserving everything you already use for Java and Kotlin development.

You’ll gain access to additional features previously unavailable in the Community Edition, such as basic database tools, non-JVM language support, Kubernetes integration, and more. These upgrades will improve your productivity without disrupting your current workflow.

A free 30-day Ultimate trial allows you to explore IntelliJ IDEA’s advanced features without any upfront commitment. After the trial ends, you can continue using IntelliJ IDEA for free or subscribe to unlock the full power of the IDE.

If you prefer to stick with older versions, you can continue using IntelliJ IDEA Community Edition 2025.2 or earlier. However, we recommend switching to unified IntelliJ IDEA as it will be the only edition receiving updates and new features in upcoming releases.

You can also choose to build the open-source edition from GitHub, which we will maintain alongside the unified distribution. These builds will include core functionality and support for JetBrains Marketplace plugins, including paid ones.

For IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate users

Your existing Ultimate license will be transitioned to an Ultimate subscription without requiring any action on your part. As long as your subscription remains active, you will have full access to the advanced features you’ve always enjoyed.

If your Ultimate subscription ends, you can still continue working in IntelliJ IDEA for free using its core features without installing a separate edition. Features beyond free functionality will simply become unavailable, but your workflow will remain uninterrupted.

For new users

You can download the unified product and start a free 30-day Ultimate subscription trial with full access to IntelliJ IDEA’s advanced capabilities. After the trial, you can choose between an Ultimate subscription and free IntelliJ IDEA’s core features for Java and Kotlin development.
