# AI credit limits

An AI credit limit is the maximum number of [AI credits](plans-and-pricing.html#ai-credits) that a user or service account with [AI access](ai-access.html) can spend per month. The limit is a whole number from 0 to 1,000,000, and you can adjust it at any time.

When a user or service account reaches their limit, AI-powered features stop working for them. The limit resets on the first day of each month.

Setting a limit for a user or service account doesn't reserve AI credits for them. All principals consume AI credits from the organization's shared pool within their personal limit. If there are no AI credits in the pool, AI-powered features stop working for everyone, even for those who didn't reach their limit. ## Credit limit sources

The Credit limit column on the AI access page shows the limit that currently applies and where this limit comes from:

| Limit | Where it's set | Who it applies to | Priority |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Individual limit | The limit set for a specific user or service account in the Credit limit column on the AI access page. See [Individual limit](#individual-limit).  | A single user or service account. | Highest. Always overrides the policy limit and the default limit. |
| Policy limit | The [Credit limit](ai-policies-configure.html#credit-limit) field of a [custom AI policy](ai-policies.html#custom-policies). Available only if your organization participates in the [Early Access Program (EAP)](ai-settings.html#eap).  | Everyone assigned to that policy, directly or through a group. | Applies if no individual limit is set. If a user or service account is assigned multiple custom policies that [override](ai-policies.html#setting-states) the default limit, the highest of the custom policy limits applies. A policy that inherits the limit instead of overriding it is not taken into account.  |
| Default limit | The [Credit limit](ai-policies-configure.html#credit-limit) field of the [default policy](ai-policies.html#default-policy) if your organization participates in the [Early Access Program (EAP)](ai-settings.html#eap). You can't set a credit limit for a group. To set the same limit for all members of a group, assign the group to a custom policy that defines the limit.

## Individual limit

Procedure: Set an individual limit

1. In the sidebar, under AI governance, select Access.

If you don't see this page, or the controls on this page are inactive, your role doesn't have the necessary [permissions](roles.html#permissions).

2. Select the Users or Service accounts tab and search for a user or service account either by scrolling through the list or using the search field at the top of the table.

3. In the corresponding row, click the value in the Credit limit column.

> **Tip:**
> Alternatively, you can click ![Ellipsis icon](images/union.svg) and select Change credit limit.

To change the credit limit for multiple users or service accounts, select them using the checkboxes in the table and click Change credit limit on the toolbar below the table.

On the Users tab, you can enable Directly assigned to list only the users with [directly granted AI access](ai-access.html#direct-and-group-based-ai-access) before selecting them. This helps when most users in your organization get AI access through groups.

4. In the dialog, select Custom individual limit, specify a value, and click Save limit.

> **Note:**
> A limit of 0 stops AI credit spending entirely, without revoking AI access.
>
>
>
> Changing a limit doesn't affect the AI credits already spent this month: only the maximum available value changes.

Procedure: Remove an individual limit

1. In the sidebar, under AI governance, select Access.

If you don't see this page, or the controls on this page are inactive, your role doesn't have the necessary [permissions](roles.html#permissions).

2. Select the Users or Service accounts tab and search for a user or service account either by scrolling through the list or using the search field at the top of the table.

3. In the corresponding row, click the value in the Credit limit column.
