# AI seats

An AI seat is a unit you buy on a paid plan. A seat authorizes one user with [AI access](ai-access.html) to use AI-powered features.

> **Note:**
> Organizations on the Basic plan don't use AI seats.

An organization has a shared pool of AI seats that are not tied to specific users. A seat is automatically assigned when you grant AI access to a user and returned to the pool when you revoke access. Seats also return to the pool when a user is deleted from the organization. A seat is assigned even if the user never uses AI-powered features.

If there are users with AI access but with no AI seat, a released seat goes to the user who has been waiting the longest. If there are no such users, the seat stays in the shared pool.

The seat doesn't cover the AI usage, which is charged separately in [AI credits](plans-and-pricing.html#ai-credits). For details about how AI seats are billed, see [Plans and pricing](plans-and-pricing.html#ai-seats-pricing).

You can buy AI seats on the [AI settings](ai-settings.html#manage-ai-seats) page, or click Buy seats in the AI seats available information card on the [AI access](ai-access.html) page.

## Monitor AI seats

The AI access page shows how AI seats are distributed in your organization: how many seats are still available and which users have AI access but no seat.

Procedure: View the number of available AI seats

1. In the sidebar, under AI governance, select Access.

If you don't see this page, your role doesn't have the necessary [permissions](roles.html#permissions).

2. Select the Users tab.

3. Review the value in the AI seats available information card at the top of the page.

The card shows how many AI seats are still available out of the total number purchased.

> **Tip:**
> To review how many users currently have an AI seat, see [View the number of users or service accounts that can use AI-powered features](ai-access.html#view-ai-access-count).

### Users without AI seats

A user can have AI access but no AI seat assigned when your organization has fewer AI seats than users with AI access. This can happen in the following cases:

* When switching to a paid plan, your organization purchased fewer AI seats than it has users with AI access.

* AI access was granted automatically to more users than there are AI seats in the shared pool: * When AI access is [granted to all users](ai-settings.html#change-ai-access-settings) in your organization. * When [a user joins a group](groups.html#manage_group_members) that has AI access. * When [a new user joins your organization](users.html#add_users).

Without an AI seat, a user cannot use AI-powered features and doesn't consume [AI credits](plans-and-pricing.html#ai-credits). [AI policies](ai-policies.html) assigned to such users don't take effect.

The Seat column on the Users tab shows whether a user has an AI seat. Users with AI access but no seat are marked with the No seat tag. When at least one user has AI access but no AI seat, the Users without AI seats value appears in the AI seats available information card.

Procedure: Identify users without AI seats

1. In the sidebar, under AI governance, select Access.

If you don't see this page, or the controls on this page are inactive, make sure your role has the necessary [permissions](roles.html#permissions).

2. Select the Users tab.

3. In the AI seats available information card, click Show next to the Users without AI seats value.

> **Note:**
> The Show button requires the [Manage AI access](roles.html#permissions_manage_ai_access) permission.

The table shows only the users without AI seats. To let them use AI-powered features, [buy more AI seats](ai-settings.html#buy-additional-ai-seats), or [revoke AI access](ai-access.html#revoke-ai-access) from users who no longer need it. When seats become available in the shared pool, they are assigned to these users automatically. You don't need to grant them AI access again.
