Note: currently, this option is available for OS X and Linux users only.

Regardless of your choice, the selected version of JDK shall be not lower than 1.8.

Basics

In case when you prefer JDK other than bundled with IntelliJ IDEA, you can choose between the latter and another kit, installed on your system.

Switching the ide boot jdk

To switch the IDE boot JDK, do the following:
  1. On the main menu, choose Help | Find Action or press ⇧⌘A or ⇧⌘A⇧⌘A or ⇧⌘A⌘3 or ⌘3^ ⇧ A, ⌃⇧A or ⌃⇧A^ ⇧ A, ⌃⇧A or ⌃⇧A.
  2. In the list of actions that appears, find Switch IDE boot JDK action and select it. Simplify your search by typing the first letters:

    findSwitchJDK

  3. In the dialog that opens, select the desired JDK:

    switchJDK

  4. Click OK to apply changes.
