Setting up JetBrains IDEs in a classroom Help

Frequently asked questions

What tools are covered by the classroom license?

With a classroom license, you can use all JetBrains desktop IDEs (including IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, and CLion) and ReSharper Ultimate, as well as our .NET tools suite with ReSharper, dotCover, dotTrace, and dotMemory.

Are any other JetBrains tools free for educational organizations?

Yes, YouTrack and Qodana. YouTrack is an issue tracker, and Qodana is a cloud-based static code analysis platform. The licenses for YouTrack and Qodana are separate from desktop tool licenses. If you are interested in either of these tools, please check the corresponding checkboxes in the form when completing your request for free educational licenses.

Is an individual non-commercial license suitable for classroom use?

Non-commercial licenses for JetBrains tools are designed for individuals who study programming or enjoy hobby development. Because they are individual, they are not suitable for classroom deployments. However, students and teachers can use individual licenses on their own computers.

What are Floating License Server and License Vault, and which should I choose?

This dedicated Quick reference page offers a detailed comparison of these licensing setup options.

Can students and teachers use AI?

Yes. All educational licenses include AI Free tier access. The Free tier is sufficient for evaluation or occasional use, but if you need to use AI every day, consider purchasing the appropriate paid AI plan.

Can we disable AI for students?

Yes. AI is enabled by default, but you can switch it off for your entire organization in the JetBrains Account from which you manage your classroom licenses. Moreover, you can manage the access to AI by creating separate teams in your organization's JetBrains Account and assigning AI rights for these individual teams.

Can we have Floating License Server and License Vault in the same JetBrains Account?

Yes, you can combine the use of Floating License Server, License Vault, and even direct classroom license assignment within the same JetBrains Account. There can be several Floating License Servers associated with your school's account, and only one License Vault.

Having multiple license servers may be convenient for you if you install one license server in each campus, for example. You can manage the entire license pool granted to you as you need, assigning any number of licenses to a specific Floating License Server or License Vault, or assigning them directly to individuals.

Does JetBrains collect any personal data?

Data collection depends on your licensing setup and the license terms. If your setup assumes that users have individual JetBrains Accounts, as is the case for the default License Vault configuration, then the processing of personal data is governed by the JetBrains Privacy Notice, meaning that some data is collected.

Is there an option to disallow the collection of personal data?

Personal data is not collected when you use Floating License Serverr or License Vault integrated with your organization's internal authentication system.

In fact, these licensing tools only collect IP addresses and usernames. In the case of Floating License Server, all collected data remains on your locally installed server. It sends only anonymized statistics to JetBrains, including details such as how many licenses were issued for each product ("10 licenses were issued for PyCharm, 6 for CLion").

License Vault, even if configured to use your organization's internal authentication system, collects usernames. If usernames include personal details (e.g. first and last names), this information will be recorded in the License Vault. All collected information is kept strictly in accordance with our JetBrains Privacy Notice and the GDPR.

Does JetBrains have a data processing addendum?

Yes, it's published at https://www.jetbrains.com/legal/dpa/.

Is JetBrains compliant with GDPR, COPPA, and FERPA?

As an EU-based company, JetBrains is GDPR-compliant, ensuring a high level of data protection throughout our processes. We have also set up measures to ensure COPPA compliance. While FERPA is not directly applicable to JetBrains, from our understanding, the measures we have in place to ensure GDPR compliance should be sufficient to protect our users' personal data.
