Leading Java IDE Caps 2013 with a Major Planned Update

Gaining mindshare over the past year, IntelliJ IDEA is upgraded to version 13 with enhanced support for Java EE 7, better Spring support, new tools for Android development, and refined Gradle integration

December 3, 2013

Prague, Czech Republic, December 3, 2013 — JetBrains®, a leading maker of intelligent, productivity-enhancing tools for software developers, have announced the general availability of IntelliJ IDEA 13, the new major release of their award-winning Java IDE for web, enterprise and mobile development.

To continue supplying developers with bleeding-edge tools, this annual update adopts Java EE 7, the latest version of Oracle’s enterprise Java platform, along with support for the new versions of enterprise application servers including Glassfish 4, Wildfly 8, Tomcat 8, and others.

2013 has seen IntelliJ IDEA win significant mindshare among global enterprises and developer communities, thanks to strengthening partnerships with the companies behind the leading Java technologies including Android, Spring, Scala, and Gradle.

One of the biggest stories was this year’s announcement of Google’s Android Studio, a new development environment for Android, built in cooperation with JetBrains on top of the open-source IntelliJ IDEA Community Edition. Maxim Mossienko, IntelliJ IDEA project lead, commented on the project: “This influx of passionate Android developers using IntelliJ Platform is not only improving our platform, but also resulting in some really great new features.” IntelliJ IDEA 13 is the first major release which includes features from this collaboration: the new Gradle-based build system, the editor and UI designer improvements, and others.

Spring developers will also find IntelliJ IDEA 13 more helpful than ever, as the new release offers better performance, a new dedicated tool window, and an easier way to configure Spring projects. Pieter Humphrey, Consulting Product Marketing Manager, Spring by Pivotal, added, “We are excited to continue to work with JetBrains on their support for the Spring framework. They’ve shown a strong commitment to helping Spring developers be more productive in IntelliJ IDEA, the favorite tool of many of our own engineers. We look forward to working together on improved features and integration.”

With this new release, Scala platform support receives built-in SBT integration and numerous other enhancements. “We are happy to continue working with the JetBrains team to improve their support of Scala. IntelliJ IDEA 13 represents the first features based on our collaboration. They address the needs we’ve both seen from our joint customers and our use internally at Typesafe with our development and consulting teams,” remarked Derek Henninger, VP of Engineering at TypeSafe.

IntelliJ IDEA 13 highlights include:

  • Complete support for Java EE 7
  • Spring support improvements, with better performance, a new dedicated tool window, and easier project configuration
  • Improved Git, Mercurial and Subversion tools (including support for Subversion 1.8)
  • Refined Gradle support, with code insight and smooth project synchronization
  • Improved database tools and SQL support
  • New tools for Android development
  • Even more straightforward user interface
  • Better performance
  • Better Scala support with built-in SBT integration
